BEd Post-Primary Education
About this course
Post-primary education prepares you to teach at secondary school level, developing the deep subject knowledge, pedagogical skills and professional judgement needed to support young people's learning through the critical years of adolescence. Teaching at secondary level requires more than content expertise: it demands the ability to present complex ideas accessibly, to understand how young people learn and what gets in the way of learning, to build positive relationships with students and their families, and to respond to the diverse needs of classrooms that reflect the full range of human ability and background. At St Mary's University College in Belfast this programme runs over four years full time and includes a year abroad, extending the full course and giving you the opportunity to experience educational systems and approaches in a different national context. You will study the theory and practice of post-primary education alongside your subject specialism, engaging with child and adolescent development, educational psychology, curriculum design, assessment and the professional ethics and legal frameworks that govern teaching in Northern Ireland. Substantial school placement is central to the programme, placing you in real secondary school classrooms under professional mentorship where you can develop and consolidate your teaching skills. You will develop skills in lesson planning, formative and summative assessment, classroom management, differentiation and the professional communication needed to work effectively with young people, parents and colleagues. The programme is designed to prepare you for registration as a qualified teacher and for the realities of professional teaching practice. Graduates from post-primary education programmes teach across secondary schools in Northern Ireland and beyond. Career development leads to leadership and management roles, including head of department, pastoral responsibilities and school leadership. Postgraduate study in educational leadership, special educational needs or curriculum development is also a route for those seeking specialist or senior roles in education.
