BA Post Production for Film and Television
About this course
Post-production for film and television is the phase of filmmaking and broadcasting that takes place after cameras stop rolling, and it is where the creative and technical work of editing, visual effects, motion graphics, colour grading and sound design transforms raw footage into finished content. Post-production professionals are essential to every film, television drama, documentary, advertisement and digital video that reaches an audience, and the demand for skilled specialists in this area has grown significantly as the volume of content produced for streaming platforms, broadcast and online channels has expanded. At Southampton Solent, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing an extended route into the degree for students who need additional academic preparation. The main programme is ScreenSkills accredited, which is the industry body for the screen industries and a recognition of the programme's relevance to professional practice. You will develop specialist creative and technical skills in editing, motion graphics and sound using professional-grade facilities, working across projects that reflect the demands of cinema and prime-time television production. The programme develops your understanding of the craft decisions that define post-production alongside the technical proficiency to implement them. You will build a portfolio of post-production work across the programme, demonstrating your abilities to potential employers in a field where a strong showreel is as important as a degree certificate. Graduates work as video editors, motion graphics artists, colour graders, sound designers, audio post-production engineers and VFX artists across film, television, advertising and digital media. Many graduates move into freelance practice, which is the common model in post-production, while others take in-house roles at production companies, broadcasters or post-production houses.
