BEd Primary Education with QTS (Maths) (KS1/KS2, ages 5-11)
About this course
Primary education with a mathematics specialism prepares you to teach children aged five to eleven, developing the knowledge, skills and professional values needed to work as a qualified teacher in England and Wales. A specialism in mathematics reflects the central importance of numeracy to children's education and life chances, and it prepares you to lead mathematical learning within a primary school setting as well as to teach across the full primary curriculum. The degree leads to Qualified Teacher Status on graduation. At the University of Gloucestershire this three-year programme combines academic study in education and mathematics with substantial school placement experience, approximately eight weeks per year in partnership schools. These placements are a defining feature of the degree: they are not additions to your academic study but integral to it, giving you the opportunity to develop and practise your teaching skills in real classrooms under the supervision of experienced educators. You will study child development, educational theory, curriculum design, and the pedagogical approaches that support effective mathematics learning, alongside a deepening of your own mathematical understanding and the ability to make it accessible to young learners. Graduates with Qualified Teacher Status are able to teach in maintained primary schools across England and Wales. Primary school teaching offers strong employment prospects, meaningful daily work with children, and a career with well-defined routes for professional development from class teacher to subject leader, deputy headteacher, and headteacher. The mathematics specialism also opens doors to roles in mathematics curriculum development, educational publishing, tutoring, and the growing field of educational technology. Postgraduate study in education, mathematics education, or educational leadership is an option for those seeking to develop specialist expertise or move into research and policy roles.
