BA Product Design
About this course
Product design is the discipline that creates the objects and systems that people use in their daily lives, combining the creative imagination of the designer with the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to bring ideas to physical reality. It is a field that demands both aesthetic sensitivity and analytical rigour, asking designers to research user needs, develop concepts, prototype and test solutions and work through the material and manufacturing realities of actual production. Good product design improves the quality of everyday experience, and at its best it combines beauty, function and responsible consideration of materials and sustainability. At Ravensbourne University London this three-year, full-time programme develops your skills in ergonomics, aesthetics and sustainability, building the knowledge base and practical capabilities to produce an industry-ready portfolio by the time you graduate. You will work through the full design process, from user research and ideation through prototyping, material selection, technical specification and presentation, developing fluency in both hand and digital design tools and a critical understanding of the relationship between form, function and manufacture. The programme's London location provides access to a rich ecosystem of design studios, manufacturers and cultural institutions, and Ravensbourne's industry connections mean your education is grounded in professional practice. Graduates work as product designers, UX and interaction designers, industrial designers, furniture and interior product designers, concept designers in the automotive and transport sector, sustainable product designers and design researchers across consumer goods, technology, healthcare, furniture, transport and the circular economy. Some graduates start independent design practices or pursue entrepreneurial ventures, while others join design studios, consultancies or in-house design teams at major manufacturers. Postgraduate study in product design, industrial design, design engineering or sustainability is a further option.
