BA Professional Golf
About this course
Professional golf is a demanding career path that requires the integration of playing ability, technical knowledge, teaching skill and business understanding. Golf professionals work in a wide range of roles, from giving lessons and running club operations to competing on professional tours and managing retail and coaching businesses. The educational pathway into professional golf combines practical playing and coaching development with academic study of the business, sport science and professional practice dimensions of the sport. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, studied part-time, you will develop the academic knowledge and professional capabilities that a career in golf demands, alongside the practical skills that the sport requires. You will study the sport science underpinning golf performance, including biomechanics, physiology, psychology and coaching methodology, as well as the business and management dimensions of running a golf operation. The part-time structure is well suited to students who are simultaneously developing their playing game and may be working in a golf environment alongside their studies. Graduates of professional golf programmes pursue careers as PGA-registered club professionals, teaching professionals, tour caddies, performance coaches, golf facility managers and sports development officers within golf's governing bodies and county associations. Some graduate into specialist performance analysis, golf journalism or the business side of golf equipment and retail. For those who achieve the playing standard, competitive professional golf remains an aspiration alongside the teaching and management career. The combination of sport science understanding, coaching qualification and business knowledge that a degree in professional golf provides gives graduates a rounded profile that supports career development across the sport.
