BSc Psychology and Language Sciences
About this course
Psychology and language sciences is a combination that explores two of the most fundamental aspects of the human mind: how we think and behave, and how we communicate and understand language. The connection between them is deep and well established. Language is not simply a tool we use to express thoughts that exist independently of it; it is intimately bound up with how we categorise the world, how we remember, and how we relate to other people. Language sciences brings formal analysis of linguistic structure, phonology, syntax, and semantics alongside the cognitive and neurological study of how language is processed and acquired. Psychology broadens that picture to encompass perception, memory, emotion, development, and behaviour more widely. At University College London, one of the world's great research universities and home to both the Department of Experimental Psychology and the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences, this three-year full-time programme benefits from a depth of expertise that is very rare. UCL's position at the frontier of both cognitive neuroscience and linguistics means you will encounter research-level thinking in both disciplines from early in your studies. The typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the competitive and intellectually demanding nature of the programme. You will study experimental psychology, cognitive science, phonetics, syntax, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, and the neuroscience of language, developing both empirical research skills and a deep theoretical understanding of mind and language. Graduates are well placed for careers in research, speech and language therapy (after appropriate postgraduate training), clinical psychology, human-computer interaction, computational linguistics, and any field where understanding human communication matters. Many go on to postgraduate study in linguistics, cognitive science, clinical psychology, or speech and language therapy, which opens routes to specialist clinical and research practice. The combination of rigorous psychology training and language science expertise from UCL is valued across academia, healthcare, and the growing field of natural language processing and AI.
