About this course

Psychology and sociology together address the relationship between the individual mind and the social world in ways that make each discipline more powerful than it would be alone. Psychology examines how people think, feel, and behave, drawing on experimental and observational methods to understand processes including perception, memory, motivation, emotion, and development. Sociology examines how society is organised, how social structures shape opportunity and experience, and how forces including class, gender, race, and culture operate across institutions and in everyday life. The two disciplines are in productive dialogue: psychology without sociology risks ignoring the social conditions that shape human development, while sociology without psychology loses sight of the individuals who inhabit and reproduce social structures. At Liverpool Hope this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who benefit from additional preparation, alongside a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you a combination of supported entry and rich professional and international experience. The psychology component equips you with the knowledge and practical skills to understand human thought and behaviour in real-life contexts, applying psychological principles to situations that range from clinical and educational settings to organisations and communities. The sociology component develops your ability to analyse social structures and institutions critically, understanding how they shape and constrain individual lives and how they can be understood and challenged. Graduates find careers in social care, healthcare, human resources, community development, research, education, the voluntary sector, and public policy. The British Psychological Society accreditation of the psychology component provides the Graduate Basis for Chartership, opening routes to postgraduate professional training. The year abroad and placement experience add professional and international dimensions to your profile. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in psychology, sociology, social work, or counselling.
