About this course

Psychology with a counselling specialism brings together the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes with a focused strand on the theory and practice of therapeutic helping relationships. Psychology as a discipline examines how people think, feel, perceive, learn, and relate to one another, drawing on experimental research, clinical observation, and social scientific analysis. The counselling strand within this framework concentrates attention on what it means to help someone in psychological distress, how different therapeutic approaches understand people and their difficulties, and what effective counselling practice looks like in real contexts. At the University of Northampton, this part-time programme is structured to allow students to engage seriously with psychological study alongside other commitments, making it accessible to people who are already working in related fields, who have caring responsibilities, or whose circumstances make full-time study impractical. You will study the major areas of psychological science, including cognitive, developmental, social, and biological psychology, alongside a focused engagement with counselling theory and skills, including person-centred, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioural approaches. Reflective practice and the development of self-awareness are important threads through the counselling component, recognising that effective helping requires not just theoretical knowledge but personal insight and the capacity for empathic engagement. Graduates from psychology with counselling programmes go on to careers in counselling support roles, mental health services, social care, education, community organisations, and human resources. Some continue to professional training as counsellors, psychotherapists, or clinical psychologists, for which this combination provides a relevant academic foundation. Others bring psychological and counselling understanding to careers in health, education, coaching, and social work, where these skills are widely valued.
