BSc Psychology
About this course
Psychology as a science asks some of the most fundamental questions about human experience: how do we perceive and interpret the world around us, how do memory and learning work, what drives motivation and emotion, and how do individual minds interact with social contexts and biological processes? It is a discipline that combines the rigour of experimental science with engagement in questions that matter directly to every human being, and at its best it develops both analytical precision and a deep appreciation for the complexity of the people it studies. At Queen Mary University of London you will study across four years on a full-time programme, taking a rigorous, biological approach to psychology as a natural and experimental science. The programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society, a mark of quality recognised by employers and the gateway to Graduate Basis for Chartership, which is the starting point for postgraduate training in clinical, counselling, educational, occupational, and other applied branches of psychology. The curriculum spans cognitive, developmental, social, biological, and clinical psychology, alongside the research methods and statistical analysis skills that scientific psychology requires. Queen Mary's emphasis on biology and experimental science gives the degree a particular strength in neuroscience and the biological underpinnings of behaviour and mental health. You will conduct your own research across the programme, developing the capacity for independent scientific inquiry. Graduates of this accredited psychology degree are well placed for a range of careers. Those who wish to practise as psychologists in clinical, educational, or forensic contexts will need to complete accredited postgraduate training, for which this degree provides the necessary academic foundation. Many graduates also enter careers in mental health support, research, human resources, market research, user experience, social work, and public health, where psychological knowledge and research skills are directly applicable. Teaching and academic careers are further directions for those who pursue postgraduate research.
