BSc Psychology
About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind, behaviour, and experience, asking why people think, feel, and act as they do, and how mental processes are influenced by the biological, social, and cultural contexts in which they occur. It is a discipline that spans vast territory, from the neuroscience of perception and memory to the social dynamics of group behaviour, and from the developmental psychology of childhood to the clinical understanding of mental health difficulties. Studying it develops a particular kind of rigorous curiosity, trained on the most complex and fascinating subject of all: other people and ourselves. At the University of Surrey this three-year full-time programme takes the scientific study of psychology seriously, integrating AI literacy and digital skills into the curriculum alongside the core disciplinary content. You will study cognitive psychology, social psychology, biological psychology, developmental psychology, and research methods, developing both the theoretical frameworks and the practical investigative skills that psychological science requires. Surrey's location in Guildford, with its proximity to London's research, healthcare, and commercial sectors, provides a rich professional context for your studies. Psychology graduates enter a very wide range of careers. Those who want to become professional psychologists in clinical, educational, forensic, or occupational fields will need to complete further postgraduate training and supervised practice after graduation. Many other graduates move into careers in human resources, marketing, management, social research, healthcare, education, and the voluntary sector, where an understanding of human behaviour is consistently valued. The quantitative and analytical skills developed through research methods training also transfer into data analysis, policy research, and any career that involves working with evidence. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in psychology or a related social science.
