About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes, encompassing perception, cognition, emotion, personality, behaviour, social relationships and the biological systems that underlie them. It is a discipline that sits at the intersection of natural science and social science, using experimental methods and statistical analysis to ask questions about human experience that are both rigorously empirical and deeply humanistic. Studying psychology develops your ability to think critically about evidence, to evaluate competing explanations of behaviour and to understand the research process from design through to interpretation. At Winchester this three-year full-time programme is taught by a team of experienced lecturers and qualified applied psychologists in a deliberately supportive learning environment that favours small group teaching and personal tutoring. You will cover the core areas of the British Psychological Society curriculum, including biological psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, individual differences and research methods, developing both the theoretical knowledge and the practical research skills that the discipline demands. The small group teaching approach is a genuine feature of the programme that shapes the learning experience, giving you regular contact with your tutors and peers that larger programmes cannot always provide. A typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects the programme's broadly accessible character. Psychology graduates are valued across a wide range of fields because of the combination of research, analytical and interpersonal skills the degree develops. Many graduates go on to further professional training in clinical, counselling, educational, forensic or occupational psychology, all of which require postgraduate qualifications. Others move into careers in human resources, marketing and consumer research, healthcare, social work, education, user experience research and the civil service. The British Psychological Society accreditation that properly approved programmes carry provides the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is the required foundation for most routes to professional practice in psychology.
