MPsych Psychology with Clinical Perspectives
About this course
Psychology with Clinical Perspectives is a degree that combines the rigorous scientific study of the mind and behaviour with a focused exploration of how psychological knowledge is applied in clinical and health-related contexts. Psychology as a discipline examines cognition, perception, emotion, motivation, social interaction and individual differences, building an evidence-based understanding of what drives human behaviour across the lifespan. The clinical dimension of this programme brings this into dialogue with the study of mental health, psychological disorders, therapeutic approaches and the ways in which psychological science informs clinical practice and healthcare. At the University of Plymouth, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside a research-active curriculum. You will explore fundamental mental processes such as learning, memory, attention and reasoning through lectures, workshops and research projects, designing and testing your own experiments as you build core research skills in hypothesis testing, data collection and the communication of findings. The clinical perspectives strand develops your understanding of mental health, psychological assessment and the theoretical frameworks that underpin therapeutic practice, alongside reflection on the ethical and social dimensions of clinical work. Graduates from Psychology with Clinical Perspectives programmes are well-prepared for a range of career paths. Many go on to postgraduate training in clinical, counselling, health or forensic psychology, working towards qualification as a practitioner psychologist with the relevant professional bodies. Others move into roles in mental health services, research, education, human resources, occupational health, social care or public health. The combination of scientific rigour and applied clinical understanding is particularly valuable in any career that involves supporting people's psychological wellbeing.
