Psychology and Gaelic studies is a combination that reflects the University of Aberdeen's distinctive position in the Scottish Highlands, bringing together one of the core sciences of human behaviour with the language and culture of one of Scotland's indigenous linguistic traditions. Psychology provides systematic tools for understanding how the mind works, how behaviour is shaped by biological, developmental, and social factors, and how people can be supported when their mental health is affected. Gaelic studies opens a different kind of inquiry, one rooted in language, literature, culture, and the history of a community that has maintained a distinctive identity despite sustained historical pressure. At Aberdeen, this four-year joint honours programme develops both strands to honours level, giving you a serious engagement with each. In psychology you will study the core areas of the discipline, including biological, cognitive, developmental, social, and clinical psychology, building both theoretical understanding and research skills. In Gaelic studies you will develop your knowledge of the language and its literature, history, and cultural significance, examining how the Gaelic-speaking communities of Scotland and the diaspora have shaped and been shaped by larger political and social forces. The programme includes a year abroad, providing the opportunity to study in a different academic or cultural context. Aberdeen's location and its long connection to Gaelic culture make it a particularly meaningful place to pursue this combination. Graduates from this programme are well positioned for careers in education, community development, health and social care in Gaelic-speaking communities, broadcasting, cultural policy, and research.
