About this course

Psychology is one of the most widely studied subjects at university, and with good reason. It addresses some of the most fundamental questions about human experience: why people think and behave as they do, how cognition develops across the lifespan, what causes psychological distress and how it can be treated, and how social and biological factors interact to shape personality, motivation and mental health. These questions have direct practical implications for clinical work, education, business, public policy, criminal justice and many other fields, making psychology one of the most versatile degree subjects available. At the University of Bedfordshire this four-year programme includes a placement year, giving you the opportunity to apply your psychological knowledge and develop professional skills in a real-world setting before you complete your degree. You will study all the core areas required for British Psychological Society accreditation, including biological, cognitive, developmental, social and abnormal psychology, as well as research methods and statistics. The placement year is a significant asset in a competitive graduate market, providing documented work experience in a clinical, organisational, educational or research context, and giving you a clearer sense of which area of psychology you want to pursue after graduation. Psychology graduates go on to work across a wide range of fields. Many pursue postgraduate training in clinical, counselling, educational, forensic or occupational psychology, leading to careers as qualified psychologists in the NHS, schools, prisons, businesses and social care settings. Others move directly into roles in human resources, market research, user experience research, teaching, social work, the civil service and mental health support services, where psychological knowledge and interpersonal skill are valued. The placement year built into this programme gives you a practical foundation that strengthens all of these pathways. Graduate conversion courses in clinical or educational psychology are also available to those who qualify.
