BSc Psychology
About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, examining how people think, feel, perceive, learn, and relate to one another, and investigating the biological, cognitive, developmental, and social processes that underpin human experience. It is a discipline that combines rigorous empirical research with a genuine concern for understanding why people are the way they are and how that understanding can be applied to improve health, education, relationships, and organisations. At York St John University, this three-year, full-time programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society, providing the Graduate Basis for Chartership needed to progress to postgraduate professional training in psychology. You will explore a diverse range of psychological fields, conducting research in dedicated laboratories and developing the skills in experimental design, statistical analysis, and critical evaluation of psychological evidence that the discipline requires. The programme includes a foundation year for students who benefit from additional academic preparation, alongside sandwich placement year, year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you significant professional experience and international exposure during your studies. Graduates who wish to practice professionally as psychologists will continue to postgraduate training in clinical, educational, occupational, forensic, sport, or health psychology, working towards chartership with the British Psychological Society. Many others apply their understanding of human behaviour in roles across HR, mental health support, user experience research, education, social care, health promotion, and management. The research skills and analytical thinking the degree develops are genuinely valued across many professional fields, and the BPS accreditation ensures the programme meets the standards required for progression in the psychology profession.
