MA Psychology/Spanish
About this course
Psychology and Spanish is a combination that develops two very different but complementary forms of understanding: the scientific study of how people think, feel, and behave, and the linguistic and cultural competence to engage with the Spanish-speaking world in which those people live. Psychology is a rigorous empirical discipline that generates evidence-based knowledge about human mental processes and behaviour. Spanish is spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Europe, Latin America, and beyond, giving you access to one of the world's most diverse and influential cultural traditions. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year, full-time programme develops your Spanish language skills to a high level while also grounding you in the scientific study of psychology, including cognitive, biological, developmental, social, and clinical dimensions of human experience. You will understand how people think, act, react, and interact, and how that understanding can help both at the level of individual wellbeing and in addressing wider societal issues. A sandwich year with work placement opportunities is built into the programme, giving you professional experience in a relevant context before you graduate. The combination of psychological understanding and Spanish language competence opens a distinctive range of career possibilities. Graduates work in mental health, social care, education, research, international business, translation, and cultural organisations across Spain, Latin America, and the UK. The ability to conduct psychological research or provide psychological support in Spanish-speaking contexts is a rare and valued capability. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in psychology, Spanish, applied linguistics, or clinical training, and some pursue academic careers in disciplines that sit at the intersection of psychological science and cultural understanding.
