BSc Quantity Surveying
About this course
Quantity surveying lies at the financial and commercial heart of the construction industry. Quantity surveyors are responsible for managing costs across the full lifecycle of a project, from initial feasibility and tender through to final account, ensuring that buildings, infrastructure and civil engineering works are delivered within budget and to an agreed quality. The role requires a sharp understanding of construction technology, contract law, procurement strategy and financial management, combined with the interpersonal skills to negotiate effectively and communicate clearly with clients, contractors and design teams. This part-time degree at Leeds Beckett University also includes a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you practical experience across different dimensions of the profession while you study. You will explore how projects are planned, priced and delivered, building your knowledge across construction technology, law, contracts, economics and project management. The programme develops your ability to think commercially and act professionally, analysing risk and solving problems in the way a practising quantity surveyor would. The course is designed to equip you with both the technical competence and the professional outlook that the construction industry requires. Quantity surveying graduates work across a wide range of organisations, including consultancies, major contractors, developers, government bodies and public sector clients. The profession offers strong career progression, with experienced surveyors moving into senior commercial management, project management, development consultancy and director-level roles. Further professional development through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors is a key career milestone for many graduates. Postgraduate study in construction project management, commercial management or related fields is also an option for those who want to deepen their expertise or move into more specialist areas of practice.
