BSc Racehorse Performance and Rehabilitation (with foundation year)
About this course
Racehorse performance and rehabilitation is a highly specialist discipline that applies the principles of sport science, veterinary science and equine management specifically to thoroughbred and competition horses. Racehorses are elite equine athletes whose performance depends on the careful interaction of anatomy, physiology, nutrition, training, biomechanics, sport medicine and welfare, and the people who manage their preparation, recovery and long-term soundness require both scientific knowledge and practical expertise in one of the most demanding and economically significant sectors of the equine industry. At Hartpury University this four-year full-time programme is distinctive in combining its strong science foundations with a serious engagement with the business dimensions of the global racing and bloodstock industries. You will study applied anatomy, physiology and the practical competencies essential for working with racehorses, alongside optional study in nutrition, behaviour, biomechanics and sports medicine. The programme includes a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities, giving you direct professional experience within racing yards, rehabilitation centres or equine sport medicine facilities. Graduates work in professional racing yards, equine rehabilitation centres, bloodstock agencies, racecourse management and the broader equestrian sector. Roles include performance analyst, exercise physiologist, rehabilitation practitioner, equine therapist and yard manager. The business understanding the degree builds is valuable for those who wish to move into management or consultancy roles within racing organisations. Some graduates go on to further study in veterinary physiotherapy, equine science or sports medicine, while others build careers directly within the highly competitive racing and performance equine sector.
