About this course

Real Estate is the study of property as an economic and social resource, examining how land and buildings are valued, bought, sold, developed, managed and regulated. It draws on economics, law, finance, planning and management to equip practitioners with the analytical tools and professional knowledge needed to operate across the property market and related sectors. Real estate professionals advise on investment decisions, manage property assets, value commercial and residential buildings, support development projects and work within the planning and regulatory frameworks that shape how land is used. It is a sector with significant economic weight and a direct connection to some of the most pressing social challenges of our time, including housing affordability, sustainability and urban development. At Sheffield Hallam University this degree includes a foundation year, which gives you time to build academic and subject knowledge before entering the main programme, as well as a sandwich year and a work placement that provide substantial professional experience during the degree. You will develop well-rounded knowledge of real estate alongside professional practice skills, engaging with the real-world challenges the profession faces, including housing supply, climate change, sustainability and the future of urban environments. The programme is designed to prepare you for the realities of professional practice as well as for the examinations and experience required for professional qualification. Graduates from Real Estate degrees typically pursue professional qualification as chartered surveyors through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which requires a period of structured professional experience following graduation. Many go on to careers in property investment, development, valuation, agency, estate management, property management and planning consultancy. Others find roles in construction companies, local authorities, housing associations, banks and financial institutions with property lending portfolios. The analytical and commercial skills the degree develops are also valued more broadly in finance and business contexts.
