MA Russian and Theological Studies
About this course
Russian and theological studies is a combination that brings together two disciplines with deep historical and intellectual connections. Russia has been one of the great centres of Christian thought and practice for over a millennium, and the Russian Orthodox tradition has shaped not only the country's religious life but its philosophy, literature, art and political culture in ways that cannot be understood without some theological knowledge. At the same time, theological studies as an academic discipline engages with questions about the nature of the divine, the authority of religious texts, the ethics of religious traditions and the relationship between faith and reason that are enriched by knowledge of how they have been answered within the Russian context. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time MA programme develops your Russian language to a high level of grammatical accuracy and oral aptitude, while also deepening your understanding of Russian-language cultures, histories and societies through modules on literature, film, cultural history and contemporary society. The theological studies component develops your capacity for rigorous academic engagement with religious texts, traditions and ideas. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you extended immersion in a Russian-speaking environment that deepens both your linguistic fluency and your understanding of how religious life is lived and thought about in that cultural context. Graduates of this combination move into careers in education, research, journalism, international relations and the cultural sector, as well as roles in religious organisations, chaplaincy and interfaith work. The combination of Russian language skill and theological understanding is particularly valuable in contexts involving Russian-speaking communities or organisations engaged with Eastern European religious and cultural affairs. Postgraduate study in Russian studies, theology, area studies, religious studies or international relations is a natural further step.
