Secondary teaching studies with a specialism in geography is a purpose-built degree for students who are certain about their career direction and want an efficient, integrated route into secondary school teaching. Rather than following a conventional geography degree and then a separate teacher training qualification, this two-year full-time programme combines geographical subject knowledge with the pedagogical training and classroom experience needed to teach geography effectively to secondary school pupils. At the University of Hull, this innovative degree develops your knowledge of geography as a subject alongside your understanding of how young people learn, how the geography curriculum is structured and what makes effective teaching across the full range of topics geography encompasses, from physical processes and environmental science to human geography, development and spatial thinking. You will engage with both the content and the pedagogy of the subject, preparing you to teach geography in ways that are engaging, accurate and suited to the full range of secondary learners. Typical entry is around 120 UCAS tariff points. Graduation from this degree provides strong preparation for entry to initial teacher training, whether through a PGCE, School Direct or another route, allowing you to gain Qualified Teacher Status and begin a teaching career. Many graduates move directly into geography teacher training immediately after completing the degree, often completing their PGCE within the same year of graduation. The combination of geographical knowledge and pedagogical grounding also prepares graduates for roles in educational publishing, outdoor and environmental education, curriculum development and educational consultancy. Further study in geography or education is available for those who wish to develop their expertise in either dimension.
