About this course
Sociology and English is a combination that approaches human experience from two complementary directions. Sociology examines how societies are structured, how inequalities are produced and reproduced, and how institutions and cultural forces shape the conditions in which people live. English literature explores those same human realities through narrative, language, and imaginative form, reading the ways that literary texts both reflect and critique the social worlds they come from. Together, these disciplines ask serious questions about who we are, how we are shaped by where and when we live, and what literature reveals about the human experience of social life. At the University of Derby, this programme includes a foundation year for students who would benefit from a structured academic introduction before engaging with the full degree. The main programme combines sociological theory, research methods, and engagement with substantive issues including equality, social structure, and cultural change, with the critical study of literary texts across a range of genres and periods. The sandwich year and work placement provision give you professional experience before you graduate, and the combination of analytical and communicative skills the programme develops is genuinely valued by employers. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points. Graduates work in social research, community development, education, publishing, journalism, the voluntary sector, equality and diversity roles, arts administration, and public policy.
