BA Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the discipline that examines how human societies are structured, how they change, and how the social forces of class, race, gender, religion, and power shape individual lives in ways that are often invisible precisely because they are so pervasive. It asks fundamental questions about why inequalities persist, how institutions reproduce themselves, what holds communities together and drives them apart, and what the consequences of globalisation, technological change, and cultural transformation have been for different groups of people. These are not abstract academic questions: they connect directly to the most pressing issues of contemporary life. At Birmingham City University, this three-year, full-time degree equips you with the theoretical and methodological tools to investigate complex social questions that require serious reflection, critical analysis, and genuine engagement with evidence. You will develop skills in both qualitative and quantitative social research, learn to evaluate theories and data critically, and build the capacity to think systematically about social phenomena at multiple scales. The degree includes a sandwich year and work placements, connecting your sociological knowledge to professional contexts and developing the practical skills that employers in research, policy, and the voluntary sector value. Sociology graduates work across a wide range of fields: social research, policy analysis, journalism, social work, community development, education, public health, NGOs, the civil service, and human resources are all common destinations. The analytical and communication skills the degree develops are valued wherever complex social problems need to be understood and addressed. Postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, social work, criminology, or research methods provides routes to more specialised professional and research roles.
