BA Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the scientific study of human society, examining the structures, institutions, inequalities, and dynamics that shape social life at every level, from everyday interactions to global systems. It asks why societies are organised the way they are, how power is distributed and exercised, how class, race, gender, age, disability, sexuality, and religion intersect to produce patterns of privilege and disadvantage, and how social movements arise to challenge or reinforce existing arrangements. Sociology is a discipline with both analytical rigour and genuine social engagement, committed to understanding the world as it is in order to think clearly about how it might be different. At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year, full-time degree invites you to delve into the challenges of privilege and disadvantage, investigate the major social divisions of contemporary life, and explore social movements for equality in a global context. You will develop strong skills in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, learning how sociologists gather and analyse evidence about social life. The programme includes a foundation year for those who need to build their academic foundations before the main degree, as well as a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, giving you both academic preparation and professional experience. Graduates from sociology programmes work in social research, public policy, social work, community development, education, journalism, human resources, marketing, international development, and the voluntary sector. The analytical and research skills that sociology develops are valued across any sector where understanding human behaviour and social context matters. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in sociology, social research, social work, public policy, or related disciplines, building specialist expertise for research or professional careers.
