About this course
Sociology is the discipline that tries to make sense of the social world in all its complexity. It examines how societies are organised, how inequalities are produced and reproduced, how institutions shape people's lives and how collective change happens. From rising economic inequality and the climate crisis to the contested terrain of democracy, the impact of social media on public discourse and the recognition of marginalised communities, sociology brings analytical tools to bear on precisely the questions that matter most in the contemporary world. At the University of Northampton, this three-year full-time programme gives you a rigorous grounding in sociological theory and research methods alongside substantive engagement with the contemporary social questions that define our times. You will study the major theoretical traditions in sociology, from classical foundations to contemporary debates, and develop both qualitative and quantitative research skills that allow you to investigate social questions systematically. The programme encourages you to think critically about received wisdom and to question the assumptions that underlie social and political arrangements, developing the intellectual independence and analytical precision that employers in a wide range of fields value. Sociology graduates are in demand across a wide range of sectors precisely because the discipline builds transferable skills in research, critical analysis and the ability to understand and communicate complex social phenomena. Social work, community development, public health, education, the civil service, journalism, the charitable sector, policy research and human resources all draw on sociology graduates. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, social work or a related discipline, where the theoretical and methodological foundations of their undergraduate degree support more advanced research and professional training.
