About this course

Sociology asks the questions that lie beneath the surface of everyday life: why do some people succeed while others face persistent barriers, how do institutions shape what is possible for different groups, what drives social change, and how do culture, identity, and structure interact? It is a discipline that trains you to see the social world not as natural or inevitable but as something produced by human choices and arrangements that could, in principle, be different. At the University of the West of England in Bristol you will engage with the major theoretical traditions in sociology alongside the research methods that allow sociologists to investigate the social world empirically. You will study inequality, race and ethnicity, gender, culture, globalisation, digital society, health, education, and the organisations and institutions through which social life is structured. The programme develops your ability to think critically, to work with evidence, and to communicate complex ideas clearly, all skills that are broadly transferable across professional life. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you direct professional experience in a relevant organisation and the opportunity to study sociology from a different national perspective. Sociology graduates pursue careers in social research, the civil service, local government, social work, education, journalism, NGOs, international development, health services, and a wide range of other sectors where understanding social dynamics is valuable. The analytical and research skills the degree develops are genuinely transferable, and employers across many sectors value graduates who can think systematically about the human dimensions of complex problems. Many students continue to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, or a related field.
