BA Sociology with a Language
About this course
Sociology with a language is a degree that takes seriously two related forms of understanding: the analytical tools needed to make sense of how societies are organised and the linguistic competence needed to engage with cultures and communities that operate beyond the English-speaking world. Sociology asks how inequality is produced and sustained, how institutions shape individual lives and how social change happens. Adding a language to that foundation opens up the comparative dimension that makes sociological analysis more powerful, giving you access to different national and cultural contexts through their own intellectual and expressive traditions. At the University of Sussex this three-year programme combines study in Sussex's internationally respected sociology department with language learning that develops your ability to communicate and engage across cultural boundaries. You will engage with sociological theory, research methods and substantive areas including race, gender, class, globalisation and the sociology of media, while also developing practical language skills in your chosen language. A foundation year, sandwich year, work placements and a year abroad are all built into the programme, providing structured support, professional experience and immersive international study at different stages. The combination of sociological depth and linguistic and cultural range makes graduates distinctive. Graduates of sociology with a language work in the public sector, charities and NGOs, international organisations, social research, policy analysis, journalism, education, community development and equality and diversity roles. The language element opens additional doors in international organisations, cultural diplomacy, translation, journalism with an international focus and roles in businesses or organisations operating across national borders. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, international development, social work or related disciplines, using the combination of analytical and linguistic training as a foundation for specialist academic or professional work.
