BSc Sociology with Criminology
About this course
Sociology with criminology offers an approach to understanding society and crime that is broader than either discipline alone can provide. Sociology supplies the theoretical frameworks and research methods to analyse how social structures, inequalities, and institutions shape individual behaviour and life chances. Criminology brings those tools to bear specifically on the definition, causes, experience, and consequences of crime, deviance, and the formal systems through which society responds to them. Together they allow you to explore the connections between how we organise our collective life and what kinds of harm and conflict emerge from it. At Middlesex University, which has established a strong reputation in social sciences and criminology, this three-year programme builds your critical sociological thinking alongside criminological expertise. You will develop the knowledge and skills to analyse society, crime, and justice from multiple perspectives, engaging with theory and empirical research in equal measure. The programme includes a foundation year for those who benefit from additional preparation, a sandwich placement year giving you professional experience in a relevant setting, and embedded work placement opportunities throughout. These features mean you leave the programme not only with academic understanding but with direct experience of how that understanding applies in practice. Graduates are well prepared for roles in social research, policy development, criminal justice organisations, probation, social work, the voluntary sector, community development, youth justice, and advocacy. The combination of sociological analysis and criminological knowledge is also valued in journalism, education, and public administration. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in sociology, criminology, social policy, law, or professional training in social work, probation, or related fields.
