BA Sociology with Foundation
About this course
Sociology is the scientific study of society: the structures, institutions, norms, and power relations that shape how people live, how inequality is produced and reproduced, and how social change happens. It is a discipline that takes the world's most pressing challenges, from climate change and migration to economic inequality and political polarisation, as its subject matter, asking not just what is happening but why, and what forces have produced the conditions we find ourselves in. At the University of Westminster, this four-year full-time degree with foundation year is designed to welcome students who want to develop their academic skills before moving into the full honours programme. Whether you have not studied sociology before, want to build your confidence in university-level work, or are returning to education after a break, the foundation year provides the preparation you need. Once you are in the honours degree, you will engage with the major theoretical traditions in sociology, developing the analytical vocabulary to understand social structures and processes. Westminster's location in London gives you direct access to the social diversity, political institutions, and civic organisations that make the city one of the most interesting places in the world to study society. The sandwich placement year gives you an opportunity to gain professional experience in a working environment, while a year abroad broadens your perspective and the work placement element connects your academic development to real practice. You will develop research skills alongside theoretical knowledge, learning to design and conduct social enquiry and to evaluate evidence critically. Graduates go on to careers in social research, policy, public services, community development, the voluntary sector, journalism, education, and the civil service. Sociology is also a strong foundation for postgraduate study in social research methods, criminology, social policy, or related fields. The skills it develops, critical analysis, research design, and the ability to understand complex social situations, are valued across a wide range of professional contexts.
