About this course
Sociology is the scientific study of society: the structures, institutions, norms, and power relations that shape how people live, how inequality is produced and reproduced, and how social change happens. It is a discipline that takes the world's most pressing challenges, from climate change and migration to economic inequality and political polarisation, as its subject matter, asking not just what is happening but why, and what forces have produced the conditions we find ourselves in. At the University of Westminster, this four-year full-time degree with foundation year is designed to welcome students who want to develop their academic skills before moving into the full honours programme. Whether you have not studied sociology before, want to build your confidence in university-level work, or are returning to education after a break, the foundation year provides the preparation you need. Once you are in the honours degree, you will engage with the major theoretical traditions in sociology, developing the analytical vocabulary to understand social structures and processes.
