BA Sociology with Foundation Year
About this course
Sociology is the discipline that examines how human societies work, how they are organised, how power is distributed within them and how they change over time. It asks why inequality persists, how institutions shape behaviour, how culture is produced and reproduced, and what forces drive social transformation. Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative research methods, sociology combines theoretical rigour with empirical investigation to develop understanding of issues ranging from poverty and racism to technology, climate change and collective identity. It is a discipline with strong relevance to the contemporary world and real analytical power for anyone trying to understand it. At Keele University this four-year full-time BA includes a foundation year, which gives you additional time to build the academic skills and intellectual confidence you need before entering the main three-year programme. You will explore the intersections of culture, community and identity, developing your understanding of how social systems work and how individuals navigate their roles within them. The programme engages with contemporary social phenomena, from the social implications of advancing technology to the social dimensions of climate change, encouraging you to analyse these challenges and think constructively about possible responses. You will develop skills in social research, critical analysis and evidence-based argument that are highly transferable. Graduates from Sociology degrees go on to a wide range of careers. Many find roles in social work, community development, public health, policy research, human resources and education. Others work in journalism, broadcasting, government, the charitable sector, research agencies and social enterprise. The analytical skills, social awareness and research competence that sociology develops are valued across the public, private and voluntary sectors. For those wishing to continue their studies, the degree provides strong preparation for postgraduate work in sociology, social policy, criminology, social research, education or related social science disciplines.
