BSc Sociology with Placements
About this course
Sociology is the discipline that asks how society works, who holds power within it, and why inequalities persist. It examines how race, class, gender, migration, and culture shape the lives of individuals and communities, and how social change happens, or fails to happen, despite pressure from below and above. Studying sociology develops a way of thinking about the social world that is at once critical, empirical, and genuinely illuminating. At Brunel University London, this four-year programme draws on the expertise of internationally recognised academics who bring global perspectives to some of the most pressing social and cultural challenges of our time. You will engage with questions of race and racism, political power, social inequality, urban life, colonialism, social movements, migration, digital media, gender, and popular culture, developing both theoretical understanding and the research skills to investigate social phenomena rigorously. The degree includes placements, giving you the opportunity to apply your sociological thinking in professional contexts and build the practical experience that complements your academic training. This combination of strong scholarly foundations and real-world engagement means you leave Brunel with both a nuanced understanding of the social world and the skills to work within it. The typical entry tariff is 88 UCAS points. Graduates of sociology programmes at Brunel go into an exceptionally wide range of careers. Social work, public policy, community development, education, journalism, human resources, the charity sector, the civil service, and research are all common destinations. The critical thinking, research competence, and communication skills the degree develops are transferable across contexts where understanding people and social structures matters. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, social work, criminology, or education, building on the analytical foundations the undergraduate degree has provided.
