BSc Sociology with Psychology
About this course
Sociology with psychology is a degree that brings together two powerful and complementary lenses on human life. Sociology examines the structures, institutions, inequalities, and cultural forces that shape how societies work and how people's life chances and experiences are distributed. Psychology applies scientific methods to understanding the mind, behaviour, emotion, cognition, and development of individuals. Together, they allow you to understand people both as social beings shaped by their context and as individuals with their own psychological makeup, motivations, and inner lives. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this four-year full-time programme gives you the opportunity to work alongside leading social researchers and to develop your own ideas and insights aimed at improving lives and the social structures around them, as the course description reflects. You will build your sociological and psychological knowledge progressively, developing research methods skills in both qualitative and quantitative approaches alongside substantive engagement with inequality, identity, mental health, organisations, and social change. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience that connects your academic knowledge to real settings in health, education, social care, research, or the voluntary sector. Graduates from sociology with psychology go on to work in social research, mental health services, human resources, education, public health, social work, policy, and a wide range of roles in the third sector. The combination of social scientific understanding and psychological knowledge is particularly valuable in roles that require both empathy with individuals and analytical understanding of the systems that affect them. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in social work, clinical or counselling psychology, public health, or sociology, developing specialist expertise for careers in practice or research.
