BEng Software Engineering with Foundation
About this course
Software engineering is the discipline that addresses how large, complex software systems are built to be reliable, maintainable, and adaptable over time. While programming is central to software development, software engineering encompasses a much broader set of concerns: how requirements are gathered and specified, how systems are designed and architected, how teams collaborate effectively, how testing ensures quality, and how software is deployed and maintained throughout its useful life. As organisations in every sector depend increasingly on software, the ability to apply systematic, disciplined approaches to its development has become a critical professional skill. At the University of Westminster, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a structured entry point for students who are strongly motivated and capable but may not have the most conventional prior qualifications. The foundation year builds the mathematical, computational, and academic skills needed for the degree proper, ensuring all students are well prepared for the technical content that follows. Across the programme you will study computer science fundamentals, including algorithms, data structures, databases, networks, and programming, alongside the software engineering specialisation: software architecture, design patterns, testing methodologies, agile and other development methodologies, quality assurance, and the management of complex software projects. A sandwich year with work placement gives you a substantial period of professional experience in a software development environment, building the applied competence and professional judgement that employers consistently value. Graduates are well prepared for careers across the technology sector and the many organisations that depend on software. Roles include software developer, software engineer, systems analyst, test engineer, technical lead, and development operations engineer. Organisations in finance, healthcare, retail, media, government, and manufacturing all recruit software engineers. The placement year experience gives graduates a significant advantage in the job market, and many graduates find their first permanent role through their placement organisation. Postgraduate study in software engineering, computer science, or related fields provides a route into research and specialist senior roles.
