BA Spanish and English
About this course
Spanish and English is a degree that develops two of the most widely spoken languages in the world, combining linguistic and cultural depth across both. English opens access to a global literary and cultural tradition stretching from medieval poetry to contemporary fiction, while Spanish gives you access to a remarkable diversity of literary, historical, and contemporary cultures spanning Spain, Latin America, and communities across the world. Together, they develop a rare combination of critical literacy, cross-cultural understanding, and communicative ability. At the University of Westminster, this part-time programme trains you to become a competent linguist and communicator, ready to enter graduate employment. The programme places particular emphasis on employability, offering high-quality teaching in all language skills alongside knowledge and understanding of contemporary cultural contexts in both the English-speaking and Spanish-speaking worlds. You will study literature, film, linguistics, and cultural analysis in both languages, developing the close reading and analytical writing skills that characterise the study of languages at university level. Graduates of Spanish and English go on to careers in teaching, translation, journalism, publishing, broadcasting, the civil service, international business, cultural institutions, and a wide range of roles in which the ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in two major world languages is valued. The analytical and cross-cultural skills the degree develops are transferable across almost every professional sector. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in translation, linguistics, English literature, or Hispanic studies.
