BA Spanish and Swedish
About this course
Spanish and Swedish together open access to two linguistic communities that are different in almost every dimension but each of great significance. Spanish is spoken as a first language by around half a billion people across Spain, Latin America, and beyond, and carries literary traditions of extraordinary richness from the medieval romance through to the twentieth-century boom novel and contemporary Latin American fiction. Swedish belongs to the North Germanic family and is the language of one of Europe's most socially progressive and internationally engaged societies, with a literature, film culture, and intellectual tradition that has exerted disproportionate global influence for a country of its size. At University College London you will study this four-year full-time degree with a typical entry tariff of 152 points. UCL's departments of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies and of Scandinavian Studies both have strong reputations, and the programme gives you access to expert teaching in both languages and their associated cultural fields. You will develop reading, writing, and spoken proficiency in Spanish and Swedish, working towards advanced competence in both, while also engaging with the literatures, histories, and contemporary cultures they carry. The comparative dimension of studying two such different languages together develops linguistic awareness and intellectual agility that studying a single language cannot. Graduates with high-level Spanish and Swedish are well placed for careers in international business, diplomacy, journalism, translation and interpreting, the creative industries, and organisations that operate across Latin American and Nordic markets. The Scandinavian countries are among the most active internationally in areas such as sustainability, humanitarian work, and technology, creating specific opportunities for people with Swedish language skills. Further study in Hispanic studies, Scandinavian studies, linguistics, or related fields is a natural continuation for those seeking specialist or research careers.
