BA Spanish
About this course
Spanish is a language spoken by more than 500 million people across an extraordinary range of countries and cultures, from Argentina and Mexico to Peru, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, and Spain itself. Learning Spanish at university level is not simply about acquiring linguistic proficiency, though that matters greatly: it is also about engaging seriously with the histories, literatures, political thought, cinema, and contemporary societies of the Spanish-speaking world in all its diversity. The countries that speak Spanish have produced some of the most significant literature, art, and music of the modern era, and the ability to engage with them in their own language opens intellectual and professional possibilities that translation cannot replicate. At the University of Leeds, this four-year full-time programme develops you to a high level of competence in Spanish, with study of language, literature, culture, and civilisation integrated across the programme. You will study Spanish-language literary and cultural texts, develop your command of the language through intensive practice in speaking, writing, listening, and reading, and engage with the historical and contemporary contexts of the Spanish-speaking world. A sandwich year in industry and a work placement are part of the programme, giving you direct professional experience using your Spanish in a real work context and further developing your fluency and cultural understanding. With a typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme at one of the UK's strongest language departments. Spanish graduates are highly valued by employers for their linguistic ability, cultural awareness, and international outlook. Careers span international business, diplomacy and the foreign office, journalism, broadcasting, teaching, translation and interpretation, tourism, law, finance, and the civil service. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in Hispanic studies, translation studies, international relations, or education.
