MA Spanish
About this course
Spanish is the second most widely spoken native language in the world, the official language of twenty countries across three continents, and a living key to some of the richest literary, artistic, and cultural traditions in human history. Cervantes, Lorca, Borges, Neruda, Marquez, and dozens of other writers have shaped world literature in Spanish, while the diversity of Spanish-speaking societies, from Spain and Mexico to Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, and beyond, means that fluency opens access not to a single culture but to a vast and varied range of them. The University of Edinburgh's four-year full-time Spanish programme develops your language skills to a high level while situating them within a thorough engagement with Hispanic and Latin American history, literature, film, and society. You will study the language systematically from wherever you begin, building spoken fluency, reading range, written accuracy, and translation competence across the four years. The curriculum moves through the history of Spanish literature from the medieval period to the present, engages with the politics and culture of Spain and Latin America, and uses film, media, and contemporary texts alongside canonical works. Edinburgh is one of the UK's leading universities for Hispanic studies, with research expertise spanning medieval literature, modern fiction, Latin American politics, and contemporary Spanish culture. The four-year structure is necessary both to develop genuine linguistic depth and to explore the breadth of the Hispanic world with appropriate care. A typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the competitive admissions context and the academic demands of the programme. Graduates with Spanish are sought across translation and interpreting, diplomacy, international business, journalism, publishing, law, international development, and cultural organisations. The combination of language proficiency and cultural knowledge developed at Edinburgh is recognised by employers who need people capable of operating effectively within Spanish-speaking contexts. Postgraduate routes include Hispanic studies, translation, and international affairs.
