MA Spanish/French
About this course
Spanish and French together give you access to two of the world's most widely spoken languages and the extraordinarily diverse cultures they carry. Spanish is the native language of over 480 million people across Spain, Latin America, and beyond. French is spoken by around 320 million people in over seventy countries, from France and Belgium to West Africa, Canada, and the Caribbean. The literary, intellectual, and cultural traditions carried in both languages are vast, and proficiency in both makes you exceptionally well equipped for careers in a globalised world. At the University of Glasgow, you will develop both languages to a high level of linguistic proficiency, working with native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world and engaging across a wide range of cultural, literary, and historical topics in French as well. Staff cover a wide range of subjects, and you will develop your ability to read, write, and converse in both languages with confidence and cultural sensitivity. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a work placement, and runs over five years full-time. Graduates of Spanish and French programmes pursue careers in translation and interpreting, diplomacy, international business, journalism, education, the civil service, NGOs, and organisations with operations across Europe, Latin America, and Francophone Africa. The rarity of holding both languages to a high level in the same graduate makes this combination particularly valuable in international contexts. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in languages, translation, area studies, or international relations.
