BA Sport Business Management
About this course
Sport business management sits at the intersection of the sports industry and the broader commercial world, recognising that sport is not only a cultural and social phenomenon but one of the world's largest and most dynamic businesses. Contracts, image rights, transfers, stadium naming rights, broadcast deals, sponsorship, event management and the governance of sporting organisations are all part of the sport business landscape, and managing these requires professionals who understand both sport and commercial management. The industry offers careers that combine professional passion for sport with the analytical and strategic skills of business. At Birmingham City University this three-year, full-time programme develops your understanding of the business of sport, examining the commercial structures of professional sport alongside the management disciplines of finance, marketing, strategy, human resources and law as they apply to sporting organisations. You will engage with real examples from professional football, motorsport, event management, sponsorship and sports media, understanding how multi-million-pound deals are structured and executed and what the career of a sports business professional actually looks like. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct professional experience in sport business settings before graduation and the industry networks that will support your career. Graduates pursue careers in professional sport clubs and governing bodies, sports marketing and sponsorship agencies, sports events management, sports broadcasting, sports finance and legal roles, talent management, sports facility management and community sport organisations. The skills in management, negotiation, strategic thinking and sports knowledge the degree develops are valued across the full range of sports and commercial organisations that make up the global sport industry. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in sport management, sports law or business administration.
