BSc Sport Coaching
About this course
Sport coaching is the practice of helping athletes and participants develop their physical capabilities, skills, mental resilience, and enjoyment of sport, and it requires a combination of subject knowledge, interpersonal skill, and the ability to apply evidence from sport science to real coaching challenges. Effective coaching matters not only in elite performance but across community sport, educational settings, and the growing range of physical activity interventions used to promote public health. This three-year full-time BSc at Birmingham Newman University offers a research-informed route into coaching, teaching, and performance support. You will explore how coaching theory and sport science combine in professional practice, developing an evidence-based approach to supporting others in diverse settings, from schools and community clubs to performance academies. The programme covers the physiological, psychological, and tactical dimensions of sport, alongside the pedagogical and leadership skills that effective coaches need. You will develop an inclusive approach to coaching, learning to work with participants of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds, and to apply the principles of good coaching practice with both rigour and care. An entry tariff of 56 UCAS points reflects an exceptionally inclusive admissions approach, making the programme accessible to students with a wide range of prior qualifications. Graduates from sport coaching programmes move into careers as sports coaches, physical education teachers, community sports development officers, performance support staff in professional sport, sports coordinators in schools and leisure facilities, and health and wellbeing programme managers. Many continue to further qualifications in sports coaching, physical education, or sports science, building specialist expertise in areas such as strength and conditioning or sports psychology.
