About this course

Sport coaching is the practice of developing athletes and sports participants, helping them improve their performance, sustain their engagement with physical activity and achieve their potential at whatever level they are operating. It is a discipline that draws on exercise science, psychology, pedagogy, leadership theory and sports-specific knowledge to understand what effective coaching looks like and how it differs across contexts, from grassroots community sport to elite performance environments. Studying sport coaching at degree level means engaging with both the scientific foundations of the discipline and the practical, relational skills that distinguish great coaches from competent ones. At Northumbria University, this four-year full-time extended degree is designed to develop your capabilities as a coach across a range of sports and contexts. The extended structure provides additional time to build the academic and professional foundations of the discipline before the main degree content, supporting students who benefit from a longer developmental arc. The programme includes a sandwich year with work placement opportunities and a year abroad, giving you substantial time coaching in professional settings and the chance to encounter different sporting cultures and coaching approaches internationally. You will study exercise physiology, sport psychology, movement analysis, coaching methodology, athlete development, leadership and the ethical dimensions of coaching practice. Typical entry is around 136 UCAS tariff points. Graduates move into coaching roles across a wide range of sports at community, performance and elite levels, working for national governing bodies, professional clubs, local authorities, universities and independent coaching organisations. Many also work in sports development, performance analysis, physical education, sport science support and health and wellbeing programmes. For those who wish to specialise in elite coaching, postgraduate study in coaching science, strength and conditioning or applied sport psychology is a common next step.
