BSc Sport & Exercise Science
About this course
Sport and exercise science applies the methods of biology, physiology, psychology and biomechanics to understanding human performance and the role of physical activity in health. It is a discipline that spans the full range of human movement, from the elite athlete training for international competition to the sedentary adult taking their first steps towards a more active life. The science that underpins both is the same: how the body responds to exercise, how the mind affects performance, how movement can be analysed and how training can be designed to produce specific adaptations. At Edge Hill University, the three-year full-time degree is endorsed by the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, which is the recognised professional body for sport and exercise scientists in the UK. This endorsement is a meaningful indicator of the quality and professional relevance of the programme. You will study exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, motor control, nutrition and research methods, developing both the scientific knowledge and the practical investigation skills that the discipline requires. The degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you extensive professional experience and international perspectives before graduation. Edge Hill's campus in Lancashire is well equipped for sport and exercise science work, with laboratories, sports facilities and a culture that takes sport seriously as both a subject of scientific inquiry and a professional domain. Graduates work in sport science support roles with professional sports teams and national governing bodies, in health and fitness, in clinical exercise physiology settings, in strength and conditioning, in performance analysis and in sport development. Many go on to postgraduate study in sport science, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning or physical education.
