BSc Sport & Exercise Sciences (including a Foundation Year)
About this course
Sport and exercise sciences is an applied scientific discipline that examines human physical performance, health and activity through the lenses of physiology, psychology and biomechanics. It is a subject with both research depth and wide practical application, relevant to elite athletic performance, public health, physical education, sport development, rehabilitation and the growing sector of preventive medicine. Understanding how and why the body responds to exercise, how mental factors influence performance, and how movement can be measured and improved is at the heart of the discipline. At Chester, this four-year programme begins with a foundation year, making it accessible to students who have an interest in the subject and the motivation to succeed but who benefit from additional scientific and academic preparation before the full degree begins. Following the foundation year, you will study the core scientific areas, including exercise physiology, biomechanics and sport and exercise psychology, alongside nutrition, research methods and statistical analysis. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in an international context and broaden your understanding of how sport and exercise science is practised globally. The typical entry tariff is 56 UCAS points. Graduates work in sport science support, strength and conditioning, physical education, coaching, exercise prescription, public health and leisure management. Many pursue further professional qualifications or postgraduate study in areas such as physiotherapy, sport coaching, physical education teaching or exercise physiology. Chester's campus and sporting facilities provide a strong practical environment for this programme, and the year abroad opportunity adds an international dimension to a degree that leads to careers across a wide range of sport and health settings.
