BSc Sport Science and Coaching
About this course
Sport science and coaching is a combination that brings together the scientific understanding of human performance with the practical and theoretical knowledge of how athletes and participants are developed. Sport science examines physiology, psychology, biomechanics, and nutrition to understand what enables people to perform and how training, recovery, and individual differences interact. Coaching science draws on that foundation to ask how coaches can most effectively guide athletes, develop skills, and create environments in which people can reach their potential. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time programme develops your scientific knowledge alongside your coaching understanding, and you will engage with both the academic literature and the practical experience of working with athletes and participants in real settings. You will study exercise physiology, sport psychology, biomechanics, and nutrition, as well as coaching philosophy, pedagogy, talent development, and the psychology of coach-athlete relationships. NTU has strong sport facilities and industry links, and the programme reflects the university's genuine commitment to the sport and exercise sciences. Graduates of sport science and coaching programmes work as coaches at club, regional, and national levels, as performance analysts, sport development officers, strength and conditioning coaches, and in sport science support roles within professional clubs and national governing bodies. The dual expertise in both the science of performance and the practice of coaching is valued by employers who need professionals who can understand what athletes need and design the environments that help them achieve it. Teaching in schools and colleges, sports management, and health and fitness roles are other common destinations. Further study in coaching science, sport psychology, sport management, or physical education is open to graduates.
