BSc Sport Science, Health and Nutrition (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Sport science, health, and nutrition is a degree that explores the biology and physiology of human performance and wellbeing from three complementary directions. Sport science examines how the body adapts to exercise, how training loads should be managed, how psychological factors affect athletic performance, and how injury can be prevented and managed. Health science takes a broader view, examining the determinants of physical and mental health across populations and the evidence base for interventions that promote wellbeing. Nutrition science investigates how dietary intake affects energy metabolism, body composition, health outcomes, and athletic performance, drawing on biochemistry, physiology, and population health research. At Nottingham Trent University you will study this four-year full-time programme, which includes a foundation year to provide academic preparation before the main degree begins. The foundation year is designed for students who wish to build their scientific knowledge and study skills before committing to the full degree, and the typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects the accessible entry to this pathway. Across the four years you will study exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport and exercise psychology, nutritional biochemistry, public health, and the scientific methods used to research in all of these areas. Practical and laboratory work is central to the curriculum, developing skills that are directly applicable in professional settings ranging from performance sport to health promotion. Graduates from this programme work across sport, health, and nutrition sectors in roles such as strength and conditioning coach, sport and exercise scientist, fitness and wellness consultant, nutritional adviser, public health practitioner, and health promotion specialist. The NHS, sport governing bodies, professional sports clubs, leisure trusts, schools, and commercial health and wellness organisations all employ graduates with this combination of skills. Further study, including postgraduate qualifications in sport and exercise science, dietetics, or public health, is a route taken by those seeking specialist professional registration or research careers.
