BA Sports Journalism
About this course
Sports journalism sits at the meeting point of two disciplines that are each demanding in their own right: the craft of journalism, with its emphasis on accuracy, speed, and storytelling, and the world of sport, with its technical complexity, high stakes, and enormous public interest. The best sports journalists do far more than report results; they provide context, hold institutions to account, cultivate relationships with athletes and coaches, and communicate the human stories behind the competitions. This makes it a discipline that requires both excellent writing and research skills and a genuine, critical engagement with sport as a cultural and commercial phenomenon. At the University of Sunderland, this part-time programme prepares you for a career in sports media by developing your competence across digital, video, and broadcast production alongside the core skills of reporting and writing. A year abroad is included in the programme, giving you the chance to experience sports journalism in a different national media environment and broaden your professional and cultural perspective. The programme prepares students for the gold-standard UK journalism qualification, the NCTJ diploma, which is widely recognised and sought by employers across the industry. Graduates of sports journalism programmes work across a wide range of media, including national and regional newspapers, digital sports platforms, television and radio broadcasters, podcasting networks, and club and league media operations. Some move into sports communications, PR, and marketing roles within sporting organisations, while others work in content production for sports brands. Postgraduate study in journalism, sports management, or media production is a further option for those wishing to specialise or pursue academic or research careers in the field.
