BA Sports Photography
About this course
Sports photography occupies a distinctive place in the wider photographic landscape, demanding a particular combination of technical mastery, physical speed, anticipatory skill, and deep knowledge of the sports being photographed. Capturing the decisive moment in a fast-moving athletic contest, conveying the emotion of victory or defeat, or finding the angle that reveals something the naked eye missed in real time, requires not only excellent camera technique but the ability to think quickly, position yourself intelligently, and understand how a game or event unfolds. At the same time, sports photography is a field in rapid transformation: drone technology, real-time data overlays, AI-assisted image selection, and the proliferation of digital platforms are changing how sports imagery is produced, distributed, and consumed. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time degree develops your skills and understanding as a sports photographer in the context of this evolving media landscape. You will develop technical photographic skills alongside knowledge of sports journalism, digital media, and the ways in which new technologies such as in-play cameras, analytical tools, and digital distribution platforms are changing the relationship between sports audiences and the imagery they consume. The programme encourages you to engage with the full story of sport as an evolving cultural phenomenon and to position yourself as a photographer who can contribute to that story in multiple formats and contexts. You will build a professional portfolio of work and develop the professional self-awareness needed to pursue a career in a highly competitive field. Graduates work as sports photographers for newspapers, magazines, wire services, sports federations, clubs, and digital media organisations. The combination of photographic skill and understanding of the sports media industry also opens pathways in sports marketing, digital content creation, sports broadcasting, and media production. As sports organisations invest increasingly in visual storytelling and direct digital engagement with fans, there is growing demand for people who understand both the craft of sports photography and the digital media ecosystem in which it operates. Many graduates build varied careers that combine commissioned sports photography with other areas of editorial and commercial image-making.
