BSc Sports Therapy
About this course
Sports therapy is a clinical profession focused on the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries arising from sport and physical activity. It draws on anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and clinical reasoning to assess what has gone wrong when someone is injured, and on a range of manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation and pain management techniques to support their return to full function. At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time degree develops the applied knowledge and practical skills needed to work confidently as a sports therapist in a range of professional settings, from elite sport environments to private clinics and community health services. You will study the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system in depth, alongside the mechanisms by which injuries occur, the principles of rehabilitation and the evidence base that guides clinical decision-making in sports therapy. Practical clinical skills are developed throughout the programme, including assessment techniques, massage and soft tissue therapy, electrotherapy, taping and strapping, and the design of progressive rehabilitation programmes. Essex's emphasis on applied competence means that your learning is consistently tested in practical clinical contexts rather than confined to the classroom or laboratory. A typical entry tariff of around 120 points is expected. Graduates work as sports therapists in professional sports clubs, national governing bodies, private practice, gyms and leisure centres, schools, the military and community health settings. The Society of Sports Therapists provides the professional framework for the discipline, and graduates typically seek membership and registration on completion of their degree. Further study in physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, sports medicine or clinical exercise science is a natural progression for those who wish to extend their clinical scope or advance to more specialised roles.
