BSc Sports Therapy
About this course
Sports therapy is a clinical profession that focuses on the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, particularly in the context of sport and physical activity. Sports therapists work with athletes at all levels, from recreational participants to elite performers, as well as with the general population, providing treatment for acute injuries, managing chronic conditions and designing rehabilitation programmes to restore full function. The role sits at the intersection of exercise science, anatomy and clinical practice, demanding both a thorough understanding of the body in movement and the hands-on skills of manual therapy and exercise prescription. At Gloucestershire, this three-year full-time programme places clinical placements at the heart of the degree. You will gain hands-on experience with top-level sports teams, elite athletes and real patients across diverse clinical settings, which means your professional skills are developed in genuine practice environments rather than simulations alone. Across the programme you will study anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, sports nutrition, injury assessment, taping and strapping, manual therapy techniques and rehabilitation exercise, developing both the theoretical understanding and the practical competence that the profession demands. Gloucestershire's strong connections to regional sports clubs and organisations and its track record of placing students in high-quality practical settings are important features of the programme. You will graduate with a level of clinical experience that prepares you well for employment in a competitive field. Graduates work as sports therapists in professional sports clubs, private physiotherapy and sports clinics, fitness centres, NHS settings and armed forces rehabilitation. The degree also prepares some graduates for further postgraduate study in physiotherapy, sports medicine or rehabilitation science. Professional registration and membership of relevant bodies are natural next steps for graduates entering practice.
