BA Stage Management
About this course
Stage management is the discipline that holds a theatre production together: the stage manager coordinates every element of a show from rehearsal through to performance, working across design, technical, and artistic departments to ensure that everything happens at the right time, in the right place, with the right people and equipment. It is a role that demands exceptional organisational skill, calm under pressure, clear communication, and an intimate understanding of how theatrical productions are put together. Without effective stage management, even the most talented creative team cannot realise its vision on stage. The three-year full-time Stage Management programme at Birmingham City University is delivered through Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, one of the UK's leading conservatoire schools, and it provides in-depth, practical training aimed at producing confident graduates who are ready for a successful career in the industry from day one. You will gain authentic industry experience while developing the vital skills needed in each role of a stage management team, including company management, deputy stage management, and assistant stage management functions. A sandwich year and work placement integrate professional experience into the structure of the degree, which is particularly valuable in a sector where careers are built through industry contacts and demonstrated professional competence. With a typical entry tariff of 152 points, the programme attracts students who combine meticulous organisational ability with a genuine passion for live performance. Graduates move into careers as stage managers, production managers, technical managers, and company managers in theatre, opera, dance, and large-scale live events. The skills developed through stage management training are also valued in television production, event management, and project management roles in the creative industries.
